works well Flonase has worked well for me with other therapies such as Astelin and Zyrtec to reduce the frequency of nasal discharge caused by various allergens (dust, pets, pollen). I have been on it for a few years.
Please read for CORECT USAGE! Like many people here, I used flonase incorrectly. I used to "save" it until I felt "really bad". Then I would use it and think it really didn't work that great. My allergist finally set me straight. You must use flonase correctly to get the desired results. Flonase is supposed to be used EVERY DAY to reduce inflammation of the sinuses to PREVENT congestion. It is NOT meant to used sporadically to relieve congestion. My doctor instructed me to use an ear bulb to gently irrigate my sinuses with salt water. Then spray one squirt in each nostril, wait a minute, then spray another squirt into each nostril. After, a few days, my congestion was greatly reduced and has stayed that way. This is not to say I never have congestion, but my awful sinus headaches are a thing of the past.
UPDATE: I still love Flonase and use it everyday. Only now instead of using the messy earbulb beforehand, my allergist recommended ENTSOL spray. It's a saline spray with an aerosol like delivery system, so it gets in deep into the nose. Much easier and quicker than the ear bulb. You can get ENTSOl at any pharmacy, but you need to ask for it because it's a "behind the counter" item.
flonase is effective Flonase is effective in conjuction with other medications to help alleviate symptoms of environmental allergies such as mold, pollen, etc.
works if you can tolerate nosebleeds I've used Flonase for years. I try to use it as little as possible though because I have a serious problem with nosebleeds when I do. This spring I started getting nosebleeds after only two days of use. I was ready to cry. I was reduced to spraying one nostril once/day. Even that caused nosebleeds and sinus infections. So much for the product literature that claims this is a rare side effect.
A friend suggested that using a saline spray after Flonase would help. I seriously recommend this to everyone using Flonase who has problems with irritated sinuses or nosebleeds. It dramatically reduced my problem.
For some reason I seem to be o.k. without it now that its mid-summer. I'm using sinus washes instead and that is working fine. Next spring I'll try sinus washes only and will report back on whether that can substitute for Flonase. One of my friends finds that sinus washes take care of her allergy problem.
In contrast to several people who reported a reduction in their sense of smell, I find that my sense of smell increases significantly when I use Flonase, probably because I'm less congested.
Flonase Flonase has been extremely helpful for me. It has greatly enhanced my ability to breathe clearly through my nose. I intend to continue to take this medication.
flonase The best product I have ever used for nasal congestion with the least side effects. Only a mild headache for the first two days of beginning use. Fairly expensive.
not if you have chronic infections My doctor had me try this for my nasal allergy problems, but failed to take into consideration that I have chronic sinus infection problems as well. In fact he prefers to use this over nasal decongestants for use during sinus infections. I became more prone to infections while using it, so it made my condition worse, not better. I stopped using it and the inflammation eased as well. I did not find it of any help for my nasal allergies.
Breathing freely with Flonase Flonase is the only thing that has worked to clear my sinuses. I have obstructive sleep apnea and use a CPAP machine while sleeping, and Flonase keeps my sinuses open so the CPAP can work correctly. The only side effect that I notice is a slight scratchiness in my throat immediately after using. This eventually goes away and is tolerable.
