Reviews/Feedback:
It's working for my GERD I'm taking Pepcid AC Maximum Strength (20 mg) twice a day, half an hour before a meal. It has been working great. I tried the generic prescription Famotidine and it did not work.
Higher dosage worked for me I trashed my stomach a number of years ago taking NSAIDs for a painful spinal deformity. I've been gobbling stomach medications ever since.

About three years ago I was forced by my insurance company to switch to generic famotidine from Prevacid. The initial prescription dosage (20 mg 2x day) just plain didn't work. I experienced constant stomach pain and lost about 20 lbs. My doctor switched me to 40 mg 2x day, and that dosage works.

I still don't think it's as effective as Prevacid. Every now and then something provokes my stomach into a short round of pain and and reflux. This kind of thing wouldn't happen at all with Prevacid. But then, this sort of relapse doesn't happen all the time, and I can't afford to pay for Prevacid out-of-pocket.
Famotidine good in the short-term I've been using famotidine since February, starting out on 20mg a day at bedtime. It worked wonders and stopped my GERD. However, with time, tolerance developed and I had to keep increasing the dose and the frequency of the dose until I reached 60mg 4x/day...and then I had cardiac side-effects. In the medical literature it is clear that the body will eventually produce more histamine to overcome the H2 blockade, thus resulting in "poop-out" (tolerance) and you'll have to increase the dose. What I do is lower the dose and take calcium carbonate with meals, taking most of the famotidine at night, since acid is worse at night. Then I increase the dose after a week or so, since my tolerance is lost and the drug works well again for about a month. It's an excellent medication but the tolerance that occurs a few weeks later is a problem. I haven't tried proton-pump inhibitors yet, but I've read and heard they have far more side-effects. The maximum recommended dose is 160mg every 6 hours. Hopefully you won't have to take that much, but I'd rather max out on famotidine than take a PPI. PPIs interfere with vitamin B-12 absorption and I'm not sure that supplementation can help. Nissen fundoplication surgery might be my last hope because I don't want to take these drugs for life.
Zyrtec plus Pepcid worked wonders for me I had taken every antihistamine out there, and finally was put on Zyrtec, which got rid of my hives to some degree but not entirely. Then I was put on Pepcid in addition to the Zyrtec, and the combination of the two kept the hives away virtually all the time--a huge relief after years of chronic hives!
Pepcid really works Like many people with IC, I also have IBS and acid reflux. I took Elmiron with great results for the IC for about 6 months but the side effects finally got the better of me (weight gain and hair loss). I read cmelehani's review on Remedyfind and talked it over with my Urologist. We decided that I would go off the Elimron for a bit and try the Pepcid. The first week was tough. I had a lot of diarrhea and almost gave up. But after my body adjusted to the Pepcid I began to feel better. Not only did the flares subside but the IBS all but disappeared. I have been on the Pepcid since Aug 4th. (less than a month). What a recovery! Thank you cmelehani for the great idea. I now have energy and have even tried a couple of forbidden fruits with no ill effects what so ever. My stomach feels better too. With all the pain I had with the IC and the IBS I never realized that my stomach was always in knots. I'm a new person.

Almost Immediate Relief of Symptoms I find that this product is good for relief of stomach pain if I've eaten foods that don't agree with me -- for me it's spicy foods, peppers, onions. It does not help to keep the symptoms at bay in the long term. I find I have to take it when my stomach is upset in addition to the PPI medication I take.
Pepcid This was first medication I used to treat reflux. Had many good features...over the counter for one, but it simply wasn't strong enough to treat my very persistent reflux.
Great stuff! use it all the time. Recomend it highly.
